Dominant Swimmer Retains Olympic Crown

American Sets New Mark in Short-Course Event

Tokyo, Japan (Aug. 7, 2021) - Katie Ledecky continued her reign as the world's top women's long-distance pool swimmer on Saturday, setting a new world record in the 1500-meter short-course freestyle.

Ledecky posted a time of 15:29.64 in the women's 1500m freestyle, shattering the previous world record by almost three seconds. She won her heat by 29 seconds, demonstrating her dominance in the event.

The American swimmer has now won the 1500-meter freestyle final, giving her her first gold medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Ledecky's victory in 15 minutes 37.34 seconds capped off a busy morning at the Tokyo Aquatics Center, where she also competed in the 400-meter freestyle semifinals.
