Belinda Bencic Wins Gold in Women's Singles Tennis at Tokyo Olympics

Swiss tennis player defeats Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets

Bencic adds to her Olympic medal collection with a gold medal victory

Tokyo, Japan - Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic has won the gold medal in the women's singles tennis tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, defeating Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

Bencic, who was born in Switzerland to Slovak parents, is a former world number four and has won four WTA Tour singles titles. She is also the reigning Olympic silver medalist, having won the silver medal in the women's singles tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Bencic's victory is a major upset, as Vondrousova was the top seed in the tournament and had won the French Open in 2019. However, Bencic played a brilliant match and was able to outplay Vondrousova from the baseline. She broke Vondrousova's serve four times in the match and won 71 percent of the points on her first serve.

Bencic's victory is a major triumph for Swiss tennis and adds to her already impressive medal collection. She is now the first Swiss woman to win an Olympic gold medal in tennis since Marc Rosset won the men's singles gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
